Background information

ASMLmachines designs are driven for more accurate, precise and faster requirements. The production of our machines, also called throughput, is measured by the amount of silicon wafers per hour processed. Faster machines also means more cycles and increased load, increasing the risk for fatigue failure.

You will be working within the Testing and Measurement Facilities department of ASML, where a group of experts in testing investigates and tests fatigue properties of metallic materials. The internship will be the first one in a series initiated by the Elastic Element Competence.

Your assignment

Understanding of failure mechanisms of ultra-high cycle fatigue, you will gather knowledge on the impact of microstructural inhomogeneities for austenitic steels. Additionally, you will create improvements through Electro slag remelting (ESR) and Vacuum arc remelting (VAR). You will also:

• Develop a design of experiment, analysis of fatigue testing data, microstructural analysis and tensile testing;
• Document design guidelines for components aimed for ultra-high cycle fatigue.
